Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed a new lithium-ion battery technology that is 2,000 times more powerful than comparable batteries. According to the researchers, this is not only simply an evolutionary step in battery tech but also completely change the world of technology.
The team of scientists from the University of Illinois have achieved success in the new structure between the two poles of the battery technology. Typically, a battery structure including 2-pole: 2-dimensional solid anodes are made from graphite and the cathode is made from lithium salt. Meanwhile, new battery technology at the University of Illinois to create new ultra porous with tiny holes to increase the contact area between the poles and solutions to facilitate the chemical reactions happen faster. Anodes of these batteries also have 3-D instead of 2-way batteries often. So far, the researchers have used this tech to create a new Lithium-ion battery (microbatterry) which has a higher power density than a supercapacitor, and yet comparable energy density to current nickel-zinc and the new lithium-ion batteries, this new battery could allow for wireless devices to transmit their signals 30 times farther with a size battery is 30 times smaller and can be charged 1,000 times faster than conventional li-ion batteries.
This new batteries technology are the best solution for high-power-and-energy applications ( smartphone, laptop, electric vehicles, lasers and medical devices and other areas that normally use supercapacitors…), this tech will probably be used to equip consumer devices with batteries that are much smaller and lighter — imagine a smartphone with a battery the thickness of a credit card, which can be recharged in a few seconds. The effect of this battery technology is very impressive when compared with current battery technology.
